I was a little harsh, yes. And no, I don't think of the Dead as just another cover band. But I'm not evaluating the merits of the various groups at play here, just pointing out that Furthur is no more a "cover band" than Billy's band or the GD. Furthur mainly plays covers, yes, but many of them were written by Phil or Bob -- and they mix in new stuff sometimes. DSO is another story, of course -- a true cover band. Really more of a "tribute band."

I guess i still disagree a bit. GD and 7 Walkers both have original material in addition to the covers. The CD that 7 Walkers released does not have a single GD-related tune. I don't think that is the case for Further although i am not sure. Are there new songs in the mix with Further? All i hear that is new, are songs that were dropped by the GD or songs that were never part of that mix but are still covers (Time, Maxwell's Silver Hammer). Additionally while they are Grateful Dead songs, Further is "covering" a lot material was not originally Bob or Phil's. So imo they are closer to DSO than the other bands.

Maxwell's Silver Hammer?!? Hell I doubt Beatles cover bands even bother with that one.

From what I gather here -- http://www.otherones.net/songs/ -- Furthur plays at least seven songs that are considered Furthur originals. Almost enough for an album. That's in addition to a handful of Ratdog and P&F tunes.

Don't get me wrong -- it's clearly evident to me that the intent of Furthur is to cash in on the GD repertoire. I just think that you need to recognize that many of the tunes were written by Bob and Phil (including many of the GD songs). It's not a cover if it's your song.

Here are the data:

Who They Played in 2010
A quick rundown of what you were likely to hear at Furthur's 2010 shows....

• Furthur played 1460 songs over the course of the year (196 different tunes).*
• 70% were Grateful Dead songs.
• The next most common origin was "Traditional" at 5.5% of songs.
• Others from GD members: Furthur (2.4%), RatDog (1.4%), Phil (0.8%), Jerry (0.6%)
• No Weir solo tunes (non-GD, non-RD) were played.
• Nearly as many Ryan Adams tunes (26, 1.8%) were played as Bob Dylan tunes (32, 2.2%).
• Among the 1,019 times GD songs were played, their music was written by:**
• Jerry (55%)
• Bob (22%)
• Phil (11%)
• Mickey (3.9%)
• Billy (2.3%)
• Pigpen (2.2%)
• Brent (0.7%)
• Keith (0.3%)
• Donna (0.1%)

*-each song was only counted once per show. (e.g., a split "Dark Star" was counted as played once)
** - to determine song credits, authors of songs with multiple credits were assigned the appropriate fraction of a song. (e.g., "Truckin" was counted as ⅓ Jerry, ⅓ Bob, ⅓ Phil)

I do recognize that you can't cover your own song but according to this only a third of the GD songs that Further are playing are Bob and Phil's. That was my point. Even if you add in the RD and PAF and Further songs the total is about 1/3 of the all the songs they played in 2010 were Bob and Phil originals.
